Election rally speech at Hougang Stadium
Good evening, ladies and gentleman, I would like to inform you
that, tonight will be the last night of election rally for the Workers'
Party. We have not been able to book any rally sites either in Hougang
or in Nee Soon East. The PAP has taken all rally sites. I shall
therefore take stock of what the Workers' Party has said and the
PAP's response so far.
The Workers' Party had challenged the PAP to reveal what plans
they have in store to deal with the current economic situation,
to help Singaporeans who lose their jobs and to allevate our financial
hardship. The PAP has not responded so far.
The issues brought up by the PAP at this election are clear. They
are promising in contested wards material benefits such as upgrading
and other facilities by arguing that they have the government behind.
In Hougang they have stated that if the vote is lowered for the
Workers' Party candidate, some parts of the constituency would be
upgraded.
In Nee Soon East, the PAP candidate there is saying that he has
the backing of the government to provide material benefits there.
On both basis, they have relied on the power of the government,
a government that walked in without an electoral mandate, a government
that is having ignomous power to govern and to threaten you even
during elections. Why? Because the difficult condition that are
placed on opposition did not allow a contest.
Therefore, it's important for you to bear in mind, that it is not
the government that is important but the people. The role of the
government is to serve the people and to ensure that all citizens
are taken care of without prejudice.
If you vote for the Workers' Party candidates, you are voting for
your voice to be heard and to keep the government in check. That's
why you should not only vote for the WP candidates but send them
in with a large majority to give a clear signal to the PAP government.
Otherwise you will be giving them a blank cheque to do whatever
they like and that the PAP can check the PAP.
You have to decide now or you might run the risk of not having
any opposition in future to provide checks and balance. If this
happens there will be no more parliamentary democracy.
The decision on 3rd November is yours, you decide and I thank you
for your support in coming to listen to us.
