Singapore is at a cross road. On the one hand we are at the centre
of globalization, the new economy and rapid changes, on the other
hand we want to retain our values, improve the quality of our lives
and ensure that the corner stones of democracy are in place. Singapore
presently is caught up in the old language of materialism as the
only yardstick of success. We speak as if the continuous pursuit
of a higher standard of material living will necessarily provide
us with the meaning of life. The Singapore of today is run by an
elite class and not by the people.
Ever since the PAP took office in 1959, it has systematically promoted
elitism and put in place a highly paid elite class in positions
of control with hardly any accountability to the people. The PAP
elite class system has created a situation where there can be a
Singapore without Singaporeans.
The Workers' Party of Singapore believes that this must change.
The answer lies in a vision where the meaning of life goes beyond
materialism and elitism. The Party will emphasize a quality lifestyle
where the dignity of the individual can be upheld. It will ensure
that every Singaporean really matters. To this end the citizens
will be ensured that they have the freedoms and opportunities for
their fullest growth as human beings. Accordingly they will have
choices to opt for a quality lifestyle. In this context, we will
take special care to consider the needs of the disadvantaged (the
poor, the sick, the elderly, the handicapped) and ensure that they
have a fair chance in life. Your voice is important to us.
We will ensure that the government is democratically accountable
and no citizen is denied the free exercise of his or her rights
to political participation. We act in consultation and partnership
with all citizens. We propose to reverse the PAP's elitist structure
so that the flow of decision making and implementation is from the
citizens to the government.
The Party will actively seek and encourage participation in the
decision making process through the publication of policy papers
and the free availability of information. Maximum opportunity will
be provided for open discussion and debate and for interested organizations
to make their representations. We will match our words with deeds.
We will set up a system of legal structures and practices that will
safeguard what we already have and put in place new measures to
achieve those things that we do not have. We will ensure that we
live in a Singaporean Singapore where you can have a quality lifestyle
and a dignified life.
