Ng Ah Chwee
Born: 1948
A businessman, Ng Ah Chwee's involvement in politics began with the Barisan Sosialis when he was a teenager.
He had his secondary education at the Chinese High School and obtained his "O" Levels in 1965. However, due to his family's financial situation, he was unable to further his studies. He started work soon after to help support his family.
In 1988, when the Barisan Sosialis merged with the Workers' Party, he joined the WP and in 1990, became a member of its Executive Council. He held the position of Organising Secretary from 1992 to 2006 and as such, was responsible for the management and logistics of events and activities for the Party.
In 1991, when Mr Low Thia Khiang was elected as the MP of Hougang, he was appointed the Treasurer of the HGCC until 2006. He is still actively involved in grassroots and community activities in Hougang and in November 2007 at the WP's 50th anniversary dinner, was conferred a special award for his contributions.
Deeply affected by the social and political upheavals he witnessed before and after the independence of Singapore, he became actively involved in the political activities of the day. Says Ah Chwee, "It is important that we build a truly free and democratic society for our children."
Ah Chwee has 2 sons and 2 daughters. As he was unable to pursue higher studies himself, he made sure that his children were given the best possible opportunities and are proud of their achievements.
He enjoys reading and karaoke with friends.
